Walks in Salò: the most beautiful routes in and around the town

Salò is one of the most charming towns on the western shore of Lake Garda, famous for its elegant lakeside promenade, Renaissance palaces and the unfinished Cathedral overlooking the main square.

But this town, the main centre of the Brescia side of Lake Garda, offers much more than just a beautiful historic centre: around Salò there is a network of trails and walks for hiking or cycling through woods, terraced hills, sanctuaries and panoramic viewpoints over the lake.

Whether you are looking for a relaxing walk along the lakeside, an itinerary among historic chapels or a demanding trek towards the peaks of the Alto Garda Bresciano Park, this guide collects the most beautiful routes, with all the practical information you need to find your way.

The most beautiful walks in Salò

The Salò lakeside promenade

The walk along the lake is the ideal starting point for anyone arriving in Salò. The promenade stretches for around 1.5 km from the harbour to the monumental cemetery, and is mostly flat and paved.

It is not a nature trail, but an urban route with a strong visual identity: Liberty-style buildings, cafés with tables overlooking the water and, on clear days, views of Isola del Garda, one of the largest islands on the lake, with its neo-Gothic villa surrounded by greenery.

The route is accessible to everyone, including pushchairs and wheelchairs. In the morning it is particularly peaceful and allows visitors to enjoy the reflections on the lake before the Pelèr wind arrives, the typical breeze that enlivens the waters of Garda in the afternoon. Parking is available in Piazza Flaminia and in the areas near the harbour.

Practical information about the route:

  • Length: around 1.5 km,
  • Duration: 20–30 minutes (one way),
  • Elevation gain: none,
  • Difficulty: easy (suitable for everyone),
  • Suitable for: families, pushchairs, reduced mobility.

 Salò Lakeside Promenade

The historic centre: squares and narrow streets

Salò is also worth exploring on foot through its historic heart. The route from the harbour to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, with its Renaissance portal intentionally left unfinished, crosses squares animated by markets, medieval loggias and palaces linked to the period of the Italian Social Republic, when the town served as Mussolini’s government seat between 1943 and 1945.

The Museo del Nastro Azzurro and the Palazzo della Magnifica Patria, the former institutional headquarters of the Brescia side of Lake Garda, are two notable stops along this urban route.

Visiting the historic centre does not require any specific equipment and is suitable with any type of footwear. Estimated duration: 1–2 hours, depending on stops.

Salò – Gardone Riviera on foot or by bike

For those wishing to extend their walk beyond the town boundaries, the route connecting Salò and Gardone Riviera is one of the most popular in the area. The two towns are around 3 km apart, which can be covered in 45 minutes on foot following the Gardesana Occidentale road or the quieter inland sections.

By bicycle, the journey is even quicker and more enjoyable, allowing visitors to reach the Vittoriale degli Italiani, the monumental complex created by Gabriele D’Annunzio, or the André Heller Botanical Garden, one of the most interesting private botanical gardens in the Upper Lake area.

The route is mostly flat in the lower section, with a few gentle uphill stretches towards the inland area. Suitable for everyone, including families with children on bicycles.

Walks in Salò and surroundings: sanctuaries, woods and panoramic views

The Sanctuary of Madonna del Rio and the Renzano waterfall

Just a few minutes from the centre of Salò, the hamlet of Renzano is the starting point for one of the most popular walks in the Garda hills. Following trail marker 16, after around 15–20 minutes on foot from the village you reach the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rio, a small 18th-century chapel traditionally believed to stand on the site of a Marian apparition, surrounded by cypress trees and overlooking a wooded gorge. To the left of the sanctuary, a short path leads to a waterfall, an ideal stop during the warmer months.

The section from Renzano to the sanctuary is also suitable for those not used to walking on dirt trails, with limited elevation gain and almost constant shade through the woods. Free parking is available in Via Fiamme Verdi in Renzano, around 4 km from Salò following the signs from the Gardesana Occidentale road.

Useful information about the route:

  • Length: around 1 km (one way from Renzano),
  • Duration: 15–20 minutes,
  • Elevation gain: around 100 m,
  • Difficulty: easy,
  • Suitable for: beginners, families with children used to walking.

Sanctuary of the Madonna del Rio

The walk from Salò to San Bartolomeo

San Bartolomeo is a small sanctuary located at around 480 metres above sea level on the hills above Salò, reachable on foot through several marked trails. The view from the panoramic terrace in front of the church is one of the widest in the entire Garda area: on clear days you can admire Isola del Garda, the Rocca di Manerba and even the mountains of Monte Baldo beyond the lake. Several routes of the Bassa Via del Garda, the hiking network running along the entire western shore, pass through here.

The uphill route from Renzano to San Bartolomeo is classified as moderately easy and requires around 1.5–2 hours of uphill walking, with an elevation gain of around 300 metres. Shoes with non-slip soles are recommended.

Main features of the route:

  • Length: around 3–4 km (uphill only, variable),
  • Duration: 1.5–2 hours,
  • Elevation gain: around 300 m,
  • Difficulty: moderately easy,
  • Suitable for: walkers with a minimum level of fitness.

The Three Sanctuaries Loop of Salò

The Three Sanctuaries Loop is the most famous circular route around Salò. It combines the Sanctuary of Madonna del Rio, the Sanctuary of Madonna del Buon Consiglio (around 526 m) and the Sanctuary of San Bartolomeo (around 480–490 m) in a single itinerary, also passing through two panoramic viewpoints over the Gulf of Salò: Passo della Stacca and the viewpoint known as “La Corna”.

Here are the essential technical details of the route:

  • Length: around 9–10 km circular route,
  • Total elevation gain: around 420–500 m,
  • Average duration: 3–4 hours (excluding breaks),
  • Difficulty: E – Hiking (CAI classification), suitable for hikers with basic trail experience,
  • Starting point: Renzano hamlet, Salò (free parking in Via Fiamme Verdi),
  • Water along the route: drinking fountain near Renzano, at the end of the loop.

The section between Passo della Stacca and San Bartolomeo includes several forks in the trail: the paths eventually reconnect, but without clear signs it is useful to have a GPS track. In summer the route is exposed to the sun in several sections: starting early in the morning is recommended. The Sanctuary of Madonna del Buon Consiglio is often closed; the main attraction is the surrounding landscape and the panoramic lake viewpoint.

Mountain Trekking

The most demanding treks: for experienced hikers

Unlike the walks described above, which follow marked trails and are accessible to occasional walkers with suitable footwear, the treks in this section require proper equipment, training and, in some cases, experience on mountain terrain.

The elevation gain is significantly greater and the trails cross alpine environments far from inhabited areas.

Rifugio Pirlo allo Spino from San Michele (Gardone Riviera)

The Val di Sur, which separates the hamlet of Serniga (Salò) from San Michele (Gardone Riviera), is the main access route to the Rifugio Tenente Medico Giorgio Pirlo allo Spino, managed by the CAI section of Salò and located at 1,165 m above sea level, at the foot of Monte Spino and Monte Pizzocolo. The mountain hut is open during spring and summer and is a key reference point for hiking in the Upper Brescia side of Lake Garda.

The classic route starts from the locality of Verghere (around 525 m), reachable from Gardone Riviera following the signs for San Michele and then for the Colomber restaurant. From here, trail marker 201 (formerly 1) climbs alongside the Barbarano stream through dense shaded woodland, with the sound of water accompanying hikers during the first part of the route.

Technical details of the route from Verghere to Rifugio Pirlo:

  • Elevation gain: around 640 m,
  • Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes – 2 hours uphill,
  • Difficulty: E+ (hiking with more demanding sections),
  • Recommended period: April–October; avoid the hottest summer hours due to the lack of water on the upper section of the trail.

From the refuge it is possible to continue towards Monte Spino (1,513 m), the highest peak in the area with views over the lake and the Alps, or towards Monte Pizzocolo (1,581 m), the other great panoramic balcony of the Alto Garda Park. Both ascents require experience on exposed trails.

Monte Pizzocolo from San Michele

Monte Pizzocolo is the most popular summit of the entire massif above Salò and Gardone Riviera. The ascent from San Michele follows several trail markers (mainly 213 ex 13 and 287 ex 5) and passes through very different environments: chestnut woods in the first section, beech forests in the middle area, and meadows and pastures near the summit.

From the summit, the lake can be seen along its entire length, from Isola del Garda to the entrance of Trentino.

Technical details:

  • Total elevation gain from San Michele: over 1,200 m,
  • Duration: 4–5 hours uphill, circular route of more than 13 km,
  • Difficulty: EE (Experienced Hikers) for some sections,
  • Recommended season: autumn, winter and spring; in summer the heat and lack of water make the route very demanding,
  • Water: none along the route; bring an adequate personal supply.

This itinerary is reserved for hikers with previous experience on demanding mountain terrain. It is not suitable for families with children or for those approaching hiking for the first time.

Mountain Walk

How to organise a walk in Salò

Before choosing a route, it is useful to consider two factors: the time available and your fitness level. Below is a quick guide to help you decide:

  • Less than 2 hours and no trail experience: Salò lakeside promenade or historic centre,
  • Half day, shoes with proper soles: Sanctuary of Madonna del Rio from Renzano,
  • Full day, good hiking shoes: Three Sanctuaries Loop (9–10 km, 3–4 hours),
  • Full day with hiking experience: Rifugio Pirlo and Monte Spino.

For hilly and mountain routes, the best period is from March to June and from September to November. In July and August, the heat during the middle hours of the day can make the Three Sanctuaries Loop quite demanding, especially on exposed sections.

The recommended starting time is between 8:00 and 9:00 in the morning.

Parking: in the centre of Salò, paid parking areas are mainly located in Piazza Flaminia and along the lakeside promenade. For the hilly routes, the most convenient starting point is Renzano (free parking in Via Fiamme Verdi).

For Rifugio Pirlo, the starting point is the locality of Verghere, reachable by car from Gardone Riviera via San Michele (narrow and winding road; leave the car in the available spaces along the dirt road). During summer weekends these parking areas fill up quickly: starting early in the morning is recommended.

Which walk should you choose in Salò and surroundings? Route comparison

To help you choose quickly, here is a short summary of the main walks in Salò and surroundings:

  • Salò lakeside promenade: short, flat, suitable for everyone,
  • Historic centre: urban route with no elevation gain, ideal for a cultural visit,
  • Madonna del Rio: short and surrounded by woodland, perfect for a nature break,
  • San Bartolomeo: panoramic route with moderate uphill sections,
  • Three Sanctuaries Loop: complete circular route, ideal for half a day,
  • Rifugio Pirlo: demanding trek for experienced hikers,
  • Monte Pizzocolo: long and technical hike for experts.

Trekking Clothing

Clothing and advice for walks

For urban walks and the lakeside promenade, no special equipment is required. For hilly and mountain routes, some basic recommendations apply:

  • Footwear: shoes with non-slip soles for the Three Sanctuaries Loop; high-ankle hiking boots for Rifugio Pirlo and the mountain peaks,
  • Layered clothing: temperatures on the hills are cooler than by the lake, even in summer; a sweatshirt or light jacket in your backpack is always useful,
  • Water: at least 1.5 litres per person for hilly routes; more for hikes towards the peaks, where there are no water sources along the trail,
  • Sun protection: exposed sections can be long, especially on the Three Sanctuaries Loop between April and September,
  • GPS track: useful for the Three Sanctuaries Loop, where some junctions are not always clearly marked. The Tabacco 078 “Garda Occidentale – Salò – Val Sabbia” map is the main hiking map for the entire area.

Some things to avoid:

  • do not attempt the hilly routes wearing sandals or lightweight trainers, especially after rain when dirt sections become slippery.
  • avoid the trails towards Rifugio Pirlo and the mountain peaks during the hottest hours of July and August, when the lack of water along the route becomes a real risk.
  • on the exposed sections of Monte Spino and Monte Pizzocolo, do not continue in case of fog or approaching thunderstorms.

Finally, a small tip for first-time visitors: combining a morning walk on the hillside trails with a stop in the centre of Salò in the afternoon is one of the most complete experiences this area can offer.

Two hours among woods and panoramic views, followed by an ice cream on the lakeside while the sun sets behind the hills — it is hard to ask for more, especially during spring and autumn when the climate is ideal.

Boat tour on Lake di Garda with Beeboatservice

For those walking along the Salò lakeside promenade and wishing to admire from a different perspective the hills, woods and panoramic viewpoints surrounding the gulf, a boat excursion offers a particularly evocative experience.

From the lake, the profile of the Garda hills appears completely different: hidden sanctuaries among the greenery, cultivated terraces and small villages overlooking the water become even more scenic, especially at sunset.

Several boat rental services and guided tours are available in the area, including those organised by Bee Boat Service, ideal both for short panoramic excursions and private outings exploring the western shore of Lake Garda.
